FGA 50th Birthday Party

Sunday 9th June 2019 was Friars Gate Archers 50th Birthday. To celebrate we arranged a full days’ shooting and BBQ.

But this was no ordinary shoot – oh no. It was an FGA birthday challenge.

As FGA is lucky enough to have Target shooting at Buxted and Field shooting at Fletching, we wanted all of our members to try both disciplines as some do one and not the other.

The challenge was: 6 dozen arrows at Targets, 3 dozen at 30yds and 3 dozen at 40yds,
6 x 3D Targets, first hit to count, either a Kill or wound.
6 x Foresters Targets, with 15, 10, and 5 scoring zones.

By 10am hours the field was set up into the three shooting zones; a have a go area was also set up for families and guests; the BBQ was erected and the sun was shining for the first time in a week.
All was set for a good days shooting.

Once completed the BBQ and Bar awaits. EASY!

Except that FGA archers have to surrender their bows. On this day, nobody was allowed to use their own bow; only bows issued by committee from club owned stock bows, training bows and for the lucky few, the last of the serviceable good old Jellybows can be used.

Members are allowed just 6 arrows to get used to thier new equipment. Who would believe how hard it would be to hit a 122cm target at 30yds or in front of your eyes the 3D targets ducking as your arrows approach? The theory was to have a level chance for anyone of the club archers to win and it worked.

While the competing archers laughed and swore at one another’s efforts to get round the course, the club trainers were kept very busy all day with the guests and families of members in the have a go zone.

The day ended with one of the newer members Chris McGinness taking the trophy.

Well done Chris and a big thank you to all the volunteers and members who made it a great day.
